User Guide for Order Bump, Upsell and Cross Sell

1. Overview and Positioning

Order Bump, Upsell and Cross Sell โ€” The Complete AOV Suite

Order Bump, Upsell and Cross Sell is a complete AOV Suite for WooCommerce designed to help store owners increase average order value in WooCommerce by creating relevant revenue opportunities throughout the customer journey.

Instead of relying on a single upsell location, the plugin gives you multiple WooCommerce revenue opportunities:

  • WooCommerce Cart upsells โ€” Product recommendations displayed on the Cart page.
  • WooCommerce order bumps โ€” Additional offers displayed directly inside the Checkout experience.
  • Post-purchase upsells and downsells โ€” Offers presented immediately after checkout and before the standard order confirmation page.
  • WooCommerce cross-sells โ€” Complementary product recommendations throughout the shopping journey.
  • WooCommerce Thank-You page offers โ€” Cross-sells, reviews, FAQs, surveys, order recaps, and conversion tracking.
  • Free gifts with purchase โ€” Automatically reward customers when their cart reaches a configured threshold.

The plugin is built around the modern WooCommerce Cart and Checkout blocks and Store API, while also providing support for classic shortcode-based Cart and Checkout pages.

Every offer can be controlled with a comprehensive targeting system using cart contents, customer information, date and time, payment gateway, country, coupon usage, and other conditions.

Offers can also use dynamic product sources instead of a single fixed product, while built-in reporting, A/B testing, and Smart Ranking help you understand which offers generate the strongest results.

The Complete WooCommerce AOV Journey

Order Bump, Upsell and Cross Sell gives store owners opportunities across the complete customer journey:

Cart โ†’ Checkout โ†’ Purchase โ†’ Post-Purchase โ†’ Thank-You Page

Each stage can be used to recommend relevant products, accessories, upgrades, complementary items, or promotional offers.

The goal is simple:

Help WooCommerce store owners increase average order value without unnecessarily complicating the buying experience.

RequirementMinimumWhy it matters
WordPress6.5Provides the block editor components used by the admin interface and Thank-You page blocks.
WooCommerce8.2Provides the WooCommerce Cart and Checkout blocks and Store API extended by the plugin.
PHP8.3Minimum PHP version supported by the plugin.

  2. Activate the plugin from Plugins โ†’ Installed Plugins.
  3. A new Order Bump & Upsell menu appears in the WordPress admin sidebar.

3. Where to Find Every Setting

WordPress Admin โ†’ Order Bump & Upsell

The Order Bump, Upsell and Cross Sell administration interface contains four primary areas:

  • Offers
  • Reports
  • Master Log
  • Settings

Additional features are available in other WooCommerce and WordPress interfaces.

4. Offers โ€” The Core Building Block

Order Bump & Upsell โ†’ Offers โ†’ + New Offer

Every revenue opportunity in Order Bump, Upsell and Cross Sell is created as an Offer.

An offer defines:

  • Funnel stage
  • Product or dynamic product source
  • Discount
  • Quantity rules
  • Limits
  • Presentation options
  • Targeting rules
  • Priority
  • Experimentation settings

This common offer structure allows the same AOV Suite to manage WooCommerce cart upsells, order bumps, post-purchase upsells, downsells, and thank-you page cross-sells.

Discount Types

Discount typeResult
Percentage off sale priceSubtracts a percentage from the current sale price, or regular price if no sale price exists.
Fixed amount off sale priceSubtracts a flat currency amount from the current sale price.
Fixed priceCharges the exact amount entered, regardless of the product’s normal price.
Percentage off regular priceSubtracts a percentage from the regular price.
Fixed amount off regular priceSubtracts a flat currency amount from the regular price.
No discountProduct is sold at its normal current price.

Pricing note: Every โ€œSave X%โ€ badge displayed to customers is calculated from the actual difference between the regular price and the computed offer price. This keeps the displayed savings accurate regardless of the selected discount type.

5. Feature Guide: WooCommerce Cart Upsells

Offers โ†’ New Offer โ†’ Offer Type: โ€œCart Upsellโ€

A WooCommerce Cart upsell turns the Cart page into another opportunity to recommend relevant products.

AOV Suite displays a โ€œYou might also likeโ€ product on the block-based or classic WooCommerce Cart page.

Customers can add a recommended product directly to their cart without a full-page reload.

Recommendations can include:

  • Accessories
  • Complementary products
  • Frequently purchased products
  • Product upgrades
  • Add-ons
  • Promotional products

An optional discount can make the recommendation more compelling.

Why WooCommerce Cart Upsells Matter

Customers who have already added products to their cart have demonstrated purchase intent.

A relevant WooCommerce cart upsell allows you to increase basket size without requiring you to acquire another customer.

6. Feature Guide: WooCommerce Order Bumps

Offers โ†’ New Offer โ†’ Offer Type: โ€œCheckout Order Bumpโ€

A WooCommerce order bump presents a relevant additional product directly during checkout.

With AOV Suite, the order bump appears inside the modern WooCommerce Checkout block or the classic checkout form.

For example:

Add the matching protection case for just $9.99.

Customers can select the offer to add it to their order. Removing the selection removes the product again.

Ideal Order Bump Products

  • Gift wrapping
  • Accessories
  • Product protection
  • Low-cost add-ons
  • Complementary products
  • Premium upgrades
  • Frequently purchased-together products

Because the WooCommerce order bump appears directly inside checkout, customers do not need to navigate to another product page.

The order total updates in place, while the discount is enforced server-side so the displayed price remains consistent with the actual amount charged.

7. Feature Guide: Post-Purchase Upsells and Downsells

Offers โ†’ New Offer โ†’ Offer Type: โ€œPost-Purchase Upsellโ€

The original purchase does not have to be the end of the customer journey.

AOV Suite lets you create post-purchase upsell WooCommerce offers that appear immediately after an order is placed and before the standard WooCommerce Order Received page.

This gives you an opportunity to present a relevant offer while customer purchase intent is still high.

Examples include:

  • Add one more at 20% off.
  • Complete your setup with this accessory.
  • Upgrade to the premium version.
  • Add this exclusive offer to your order.
  • Get the matching product at a special price.

Post-Purchase Upsell WooCommerce Experience

When a customer accepts a post-purchase upsell or downsell, the plugin creates a separate WooCommerce order for the additional purchase.

The customer is then directed to WooCommerceโ€™s standard order-payment page to review the final amount and confirm payment using an available payment gateway.

The plugin does not automatically charge the payment method used for the original order and does not perform off-session payment-method reuse.

Available payment methods depend on the payment gateways installed and enabled for WooCommerceโ€™s order-payment checkout. Gateway authentication, saved payment methods, redirects, and payment confirmation are handled by WooCommerce and the selected gateway.

Additional purchase display modes

ModeWhat happens
Same order viewCreates a separate WooCommerce order and requires separate payment, but links the additional purchase to the original order and displays paid additions together in supported order-detail views. The original order is never modified.
Separate orderCreates a separate WooCommerce order for the accepted offer. The customer confirms payment through WooCommerce’s order-payment page.

Important: โ€œSame order viewโ€ is a presentation/grouping option. It does not merge the additional purchase into the original WooCommerce order. Each additional purchase keeps its own order number, payment, invoice, taxes, shipping, refunds, stock movement, and fulfillment status.

8. Feature Guide: Post-Purchase Downsells

Offers โ†’ New Offer โ†’ Offer Type: โ€œPost-Purchase Downsellโ€

Not every customer will accept the first post-purchase offer.

AOV Suite allows you to connect a post-purchase downsell to the original upsell so that a customer who declines the first offer can receive a lower-priced alternative.

Example:

Premium Accessory โ€” $49

Customer declines.

Essential Accessory โ€” $29

Instead of ending the opportunity after the first rejection, you can present another relevant option.

This creates a flexible WooCommerce upsell and downsell funnel without sending the customer back through the original checkout process.

Quantity can also be fixed or customer-selectable within a configured minimum and maximum.

9. Feature Guide: WooCommerce Thank-You Page Blocks

Appearance โ†’ Editor โ†’ Templates โ†’ Order Confirmation

The WooCommerce Thank-You page can become more than a basic order confirmation screen.

AOV Suite provides dedicated blocks for extending the post-purchase experience with product discovery, social proof, customer feedback, order information, and conversion tracking.

Available blocks include:

AOV: Cross-Sell

Displays products from an active Thank-You Page Cross-Sell offer or related products as a fallback.

Customers can use the Buy this item button to purchase a recommended product after checkout.

Because the original cart no longer exists at this stage, the cross-sell creates a small separate order.

AOV: Reviews

Displays approved WooCommerce product reviews for products included in the customer’s order.

AOV: FAQ

Adds a repeatable question-and-answer accordion that can be configured through the block editor.

AOV: Survey

Displays a 1โ€“5 satisfaction question and records responses for reporting.

AOV: Order Recap

Displays the products included in the order and provides an account-creation prompt for guest customers.

AOV: Tracking Pixel

Supports purchase-event tracking for:

  • Meta
  • TikTok
  • Google Analytics 4

The tracking block is designed to fire the purchase event once per order, including when the customer refreshes the confirmation page.

Important: Thank-You page blocks require a one-time manual configuration step. Add the appropriate AOV block to the Order Confirmation template in the WordPress Site Editor.

10. Feature Guide: Free-Gift Threshold

Settings โ†’ Enable Free-Gift Threshold

AOV Suite can automatically add a selected product to the cart for $0 when the cart subtotal reaches a configured threshold.

A progress bar can show customers how close they are to unlocking the free gift.

For example:

Spend $75 โ†’ Get a Free Gift

When the cart reaches the threshold, the gift is automatically added.

If products are removed and the subtotal falls below the threshold, the gift is automatically removed.

Free Gifts Can Help You

  • Increase average order value
  • Encourage larger baskets
  • Create promotional campaigns
  • Reward high-value purchases
  • Increase perceived customer value

11. Feature Guide: Advanced Targeting Rules

Any Offer โ†’ Targeting Rules

The AOV Suite targeting engine allows store owners to determine exactly when an offer should be eligible.

Rules inside the same group are combined using AND logic.

Multiple groups can be combined using OR logic.

This makes it possible to create advanced WooCommerce upsell targeting without custom code.

Order and Cart Conditions

Target offers using:

  • Product in cart
  • Product excluded from cart
  • Product category
  • Product tag
  • Cart subtotal
  • Order total
  • Item count
  • Payment gateway
  • Coupon code used

Customer Conditions

Target offers using:

  • Guest customer
  • Registered customer
  • Customer role
  • Account age
  • Previous purchases
  • Customer segment tags

Date and Time

Target offers using:

  • Date ranges
  • Specific weekdays
  • Specific hours
  • Time-of-day windows

Payment Gateway

Show or exclude offers based on the payment gateway used by the customer.

Country

Target customers by country using searchable country selections.

Example Advanced Offer Logic

An offer could use:

Cart contains Product A AND subtotal is $50+

OR

Customer is a returning customer

This allows you to create personalized WooCommerce upsell experiences based on real customer and cart context.

12. Feature Guide: Dynamic Product Sources

Cart Upsell / Thank-You Cross-Sell โ†’ Product Source

An offer does not always need to use one fixed product.

AOV Suite can dynamically resolve products from:

Related Products

Products related to what the customer currently has in their cart or order.

Best-Selling Products

Best-selling products across the store or within a selected category.

Specific Category

Products selected from a specific category, with a fresh randomized selection on each visit.

Dynamic product sources allow the same WooCommerce cross-sell or upsell offer to remain relevant without manually replacing products over time.

13. Feature Guide: Customer-Selectable Quantity

Any Offer โ†’ Quantity Mode

You can configure an offer with:

  • Fixed quantity
  • Customer-selectable quantity

For customer-selectable offers, define:

  • Minimum quantity
  • Maximum quantity

The quantity selector can appear on supported Cart, Checkout, post-purchase, and Thank-You cross-sell experiences.

The selected quantity is validated and clamped to the configured bounds server-side before the product is added to an order.

14. Feature Guide: A/B Testing and Smart Ranking

Settings โ†’ Enable A/B Testing / Enable Smart Ranking

AOV Suite includes built-in tools for optimizing WooCommerce offers based on actual customer behavior.

A/B Testing

Enable A/B Testing globally under Settings, then enable A/B test this offer on an individual offer.

When A/B testing is enabled for an offer, you can create two or more variants and configure a traffic weight for each one.

Each variant can use its own offer configuration, including:

  • Product or dynamic Product Source
  • Quantity
  • Discount type and value
  • Offer message
  • Custom offer image

For example:

  • Variant A โ€” 70% weight โ€” Product A with 10% discount
  • Variant B โ€” 30% weight โ€” Product B with 20% discount

Customers are assigned deterministically so the same customer/session continues to receive the same variant while the experiment configuration remains unchanged.

Variant impressions, acceptances, and attributed revenue are recorded with the variant key in the Master Log so performance can be compared between variants.

Both the global Enable A/B Testing setting and the individual offer’s A/B test this offer setting must be enabled for the experiment to run.

Smart Ranking

Smart Ranking automatically prioritizes qualifying offers using historical revenue per impression rather than relying exclusively on manually assigned Priority values.

Smart Ranking uses smoothed historical performance so offers with limited data are not evaluated solely from a small number of early events.

This creates a more data-driven approach to WooCommerce upsell optimization.

15. Feature Guide: Reporting

Order Bump & Upsell โ†’ Reports / Master Log

WooCommerce โ†’ Analytics โ†’ Order Bump & Upsell

AOV Suite automatically records offer activity throughout the customer journey.

Reports can show:

  • Offer views
  • Accepted offers
  • Skipped offers
  • Orders influenced
  • Conversion rate
  • Upsell revenue
  • Attributed revenue
  • Average survey satisfaction

Master Log

The Master Log provides the raw event-level record, including:

  • Date
  • Offer
  • Order
  • Funnel stage
  • Event type
  • A/B variant
  • Attributed revenue

The complete event history can be exported as CSV.

WooCommerce Analytics Integration

Offer performance data is also available inside the native WooCommerce Analytics environment.

This allows your AOV and upsell data to remain alongside the rest of your store reporting.

16. Analytics, Tracking & Privacy

The plugin includes optional integrations for Google Analytics 4 (GA4), Meta Pixel, and TikTok Pixel to help merchants measure conversions and the performance of order bumps, upsells, downsells, and cross-sells.

These tracking integrations are optional and must be configured/enabled by the store administrator.

Supported Tracking Integrations

Depending on the integrations enabled by the merchant, the plugin may load or interact with third-party tracking services including:

  • Google Analytics 4 (GA4)
  • Meta Pixel
  • TikTok Pixel

When enabled, purchase/conversion events may transmit information associated with an order or accepted offer to the configured third-party analytics platform.

Depending on the integration and event, this information may include:

  • Transaction or order identifier
  • Purchase or conversion value
  • Currency
  • Product identifiers
  • Product names or related product information
  • Product quantities
  • Information required to associate the event with the configured analytics integration

The exact information collected, processed, stored, or further associated with a visitor by a third-party service is subject to that service’s configuration, technologies, and privacy policies.

Tracking Is Optional

GA4, Meta Pixel, and TikTok Pixel integrations are not required for the core order bump, upsell, downsell, or cross-sell functionality.

If a merchant does not want the plugin to send conversion events through these integrations, the corresponding tracking integration should remain disabled/not configured.

Consent and Privacy Responsibility

Depending on the store’s location, the customer’s location, and applicable privacy laws, loading analytics or advertising technologies and transmitting purchase/conversion information may require customer notice or consent.

Store administrators are responsible for:

  • Determining which tracking integrations are appropriate for their store.
  • Obtaining any consent required before loading or using analytics/advertising technologies.
  • Configuring their cookie/consent management solution appropriately.
  • Providing appropriate disclosures in their privacy policy and/or cookie policy.
  • Configuring GA4, Meta Pixel, TikTok Pixel, and related third-party services in accordance with applicable requirements.
  • Complying with applicable privacy, data protection, cookie, and electronic communications laws.

Enabling a tracking integration in the plugin does not by itself establish or manage the merchant’s legal basis or customer consent for third-party tracking.

Consent Management Plugins

If your store operates in a jurisdiction where prior consent is required for analytics or advertising technologies, configure an appropriate consent management solution so that applicable tracking technologies are not activated until the required consent has been obtained.

Merchants should test their consent configuration together with the enabled GA4, Meta Pixel, or TikTok Pixel integration before using tracking on a production store.

Third-Party Services

When a third-party tracking integration is enabled, data transmitted through that integration is processed according to the terms and privacy practices of the respective third-party provider.

Merchants should review the applicable documentation and privacy terms for Google Analytics, Meta, and TikTok before enabling these integrations.

17. Feature Guide: Classic Cart and Checkout

Settings โ†’ Also show offers on classic shortcode Cart/Checkout pages

AOV Suite supports both modern WooCommerce Cart and Checkout blocks and classic shortcode-based Cart and Checkout pages.

Cart upsells and checkout order bumps can therefore work with:

  • WooCommerce Cart blocks
  • WooCommerce Checkout blocks
  • Your cart is currently empty.

    Return to shop

Classic placement can be configured for:

  • Above or below cart items
  • Above the checkout form
  • Immediately above the place-order button

This provides flexibility for stores that have not yet migrated their Cart and Checkout pages to blocks.

18. Troubleshooting

My WooCommerce Upsell Offer Is Not Showing

  1. Confirm the offer’s Active toggle is enabled.
  2. Confirm the matching AOV Suite feature setting is enabled.
  3. Confirm the Cart or Checkout page uses WooCommerce Blocks, or enable classic support if required.
  4. Temporarily remove targeting rules.
  5. If the offer appears without targeting rules, add the rules back one at a time.

A Separate-Order Post-Purchase Offer Is On Hold

Post-purchase offers use customer-confirmed WooCommerce payment.

If an additional order remains pending, failed, or on hold, review the additional order and the selected payment gateway before requesting another payment attempt.

The plugin does not automatically charge or reuse the payment method from the original order.

Thank-You Blocks Are Not Available

Confirm that you are editing the Order Confirmation template specifically.

Also confirm that the relevant Thank-You functionality is enabled.
